This year’s Victory Day parade came amid heightened security concerns and ongoing conflict with Ukraine. The Kremlin said celebrations were scaled down due to the “terrorist threat” from Ukraine, while Russia’s Defence Ministry warned of a “massive retaliatory strike on Kiev” if any attempts were made to disrupt the event.
Victory Day remains one of Russia’s most symbolic national holidays, commemorating Nazi Germany’s surrender to Allied forces in 1945. While Russia and several former Soviet states observe the occasion on May 9, many Western nations mark Victory in Europe Day on May 8 due to time zone differences surrounding Germany’s surrender.
