Van Hollen accused Patel of failing to uphold the responsibilities of leading the nation’s top law enforcement agency, citing what he called “credible, extremely troubling reports” about Patel’s behavior. The senator warned that public officials entrusted with national security responsibilities must be prepared “whether it comes at 3:00 p.m. or 3:00 a.m.” and said the allegations raised serious concerns about Patel’s ability to perform his duties.
In one of the hearing’s most heated exchanges, Van Hollen declared: “These reports about your conduct… are extremely alarming. If true, they demonstrate a gross dereliction of your duty and a betrayal of public trust.” He also accused Patel of overseeing “political firings of trusted career agents” and “weaponizing the FBI to seek political revenge.”
Van Hollen further criticized the diversion of FBI and DOJ resources toward Trump’s immigration agenda, arguing that moving resources away from fighting violent crime could make Americans “less, not more safe.”
Patel forcefully pushed back on the accusations, defending the FBI’s record and highlighting major law enforcement achievements, including violent crime reductions, counterterrorism operations, cybercrime crackdowns, and anti-trafficking efforts. Patel said the FBI had seen a “historic level of crime reduction across the country” and dismissed the allegations against him, telling Van Hollen: “Just because you say it’s credible doesn’t make it so.”
