Ilhan Omar (D-MN) sharply confronted Education Secretary Linda McMahon over the Department of Education’s decision to cap federal student loans for nursing and other graduate programs. Omar warned that the policy could worsen America’s growing nursing shortage and make higher education even less accessible for working families.
Omar pointed to alarming shortages in states like Minnesota and North Carolina, arguing that nurses are already “overworked and worried” and questioning why the administration would move forward with a policy that could make the crisis worse. Pressing McMahon repeatedly, Omar challenged the logic behind the caps, saying the administration was “making education unreachable for Americans that want that education.”
The heated exchange escalated when Omar accused the policy of simply pushing students toward private lenders instead of helping reduce tuition costs. “Your caps only create a funnel through the private borrowing system,” Omar said, accusing the administration of helping “enrich others on the backs of the American people.”
McMahon defended the policy, arguing that universities would eventually lower tuition costs if fewer students enrolled in expensive graduate programs. Omar forcefully rejected that explanation, responding, “That is not how it works.”
