WASHINGTON —U.S. House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), and U.S. Representatives Elizabeth Esty (D-Conn.), Mike Thompson (D-Calif.) and Robin Kelly (D-Ill.) join advocates from Newtown Action Alliance and the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, as well as over 60 family members of victims and survivors of gun violence to demand congressional action to expand background checks and curb gun violence in the United States.
Since the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School nearly three years ago, over 1,000 mass shootings, 90,000 gun deaths, and 210,000 gun injuries have occurred. Despite the scourge of gun violence, congressional Republicans have refused to pass commonsense, widely-supported measures to enhance gun safety. In addition to the Members of Congress, speakers at the press conference will include Matthew Soto, brother of Victoria Soto, a teacher killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School, and Gilles and Joyce Rousseau, parents of Lauren Rousseau, another teacher killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
The families held a vigil honoring victims of gun violence at the St. Mark’s Episcopal Church on Capitol Hill on, Wednesday, December 9, 2015.
