The virus was spread by infected prairie dogs, and initially the symptoms were a lot like COVID-19. “I started feeling feverish,” Zaeske told Inside Edition, “almost like flu coming on.” Then he broke out in painful blisters and sores all over his body. Seventy-one Americans got monkeypox in 2003, and there were no fatalities.
