The 5th grader and her family came to the U.S. from Colombia last fall, and now live in New York City. She started school there, and joined the chess club. It’s run by a non-profit called Gift of Chess. Russell Makofsky, the group’s founder, told CBS News, “The game of chess, they call it the great equalizer. When you play the game what matters is how good you are over the board.”
