In 2021, his father-in-law was shot dead at his home near Lake Tahoe. Serafini's mother-in-law was also shot but survived. After a two-year investigation, Serafini was arrested. A 33-year-old woman, who worked as a nanny for the pitcher, was also charged in the case. Serafini and the nanny have been arraigned and have not yet entered a plea.
