Created in June 2020, a portion of 16th Street NW was renamed following the murder of George Floyd. The 48-foot art installation and pedestrian-only space took up two blocks leading toward the White House. Republican Rep. Andrew Clyde of Georgia introduced legislation that threatened to cut federal transportation funding to Washington DC if the plaza was not painted over and renamed.
