However, the seedy Everard Bathhouse was a haven for gay men for decades but in May 1977, over 100 people were trapped inside as a fire tore through the building. While the cause of the fire is unknown, it claimed the lives of nine people including a 17-year-old boy. One of the fire fighters who battled the blaze takes "New York Gritty" through the hellscape he witnessed that frightening morning while culture critics explain the legacy of the Everard and why it remains an iconic location in LGBTQIA+ history today.
