I represented Ortlund's interpretation of the relevant Panarion passage properly (see 3:49) but made a scribal error with how I quoted his "Presidential parody" example, meaning my comments ONLY at 9:42 are inapplicable. Here is the correct quote: “George W. Bush was a president who served with honor, just like his father, who presided over the final years of the Cold War; and Ronald Reagan, who oversaw a resilient economy; and Jimmy Carter, who fought for disease prevention and human rights abroad" (Ortlund, What it Means to be Protestant, 169). I missed the "just like his father" bit, making it sound like Ortlund was just randomly stringing together three presidents in an atomistic way.
Ortlund did in fact provide a common figure of comparison (George W. Bush) and connected him to the others (George H. Bush, Reagan, Carter) through their common "honorable service" (matching my characterization of his position at 3:49) which is analogous to how he connected Mary to Elijah, John, and Thecla through "godliness." Regardless, everything else in this video stands.
