Municipalities, also known as Local Authorities, in Jamaica are responsible for the governance of parishes and communities. They develop and maintain infrastructure, public facilities, and services. Municipalities also work with other government agencies to ensure that citizens have access to basic amenities.
Responsibilities
Infrastructure: Develop, manage, and maintain roads, water supplies, drains, parks, and more
Public facilities: Manage markets, transportation centers, and public sanitary conveniences
Planning: Ensure new projects are sustainable, economically viable, and socially inclusive
Regulation: Make by-laws, regulations, and rules for the governance of the parish
Licensing: License trades and businesses
Street parking: Control street parking and public vending
Collaboration: Coordinate with other agencies to deliver services
Support: Support national policies and development programs at the local level
Revenue: Raise revenue through user fees, trade licenses, property taxes, and by-law penalties
