December 16, 1944. Hitler launches his last desperate gamble in the Ardennes. While the world's attention fell on Bastogne and the 101st Airborne, a green American division was being placed into the most dangerous position on the entire front line — a frozen ridge that was about to become a kill zone.
The 106th Infantry Division — the "Golden Lions" — had been in Europe for just six weeks. They were placed on the Schnee Eifel, a quiet sector of the Siegfried Line, to gain experience. What they got instead was the full weight of the German Fifth Panzer Army.
Two Volksgrenadier divisions — the 18th and the 62nd — drove around their flanks. The encirclement was rapid, ruthless, and nearly complete.
