1:03Now PlayingEveryone knows R.J. Mitchell for the Spitfire — but before Britain's most famous fighter, he designed something very different: the Supermarine Walrus.
This ugly-but-brilliant amphibious biplane first flew in 1933 and became one of WWII's unsung heroes. Catapult-launched from Royal Navy warships, it flew reconnaissance, spotted for naval guns, and — most importantly — rescued hundreds of downed airmen from the sea in its air-sea rescue role. Aircrew called it the "Shagbat," and plenty of pilots owed it their lives.
Not bad for a plane that looks like it was designed a generation before the Spitfire... by the same man.
