Circuit judge John Roberts to become the 17th chief justice of the United States. Roberts was grilled by the Senate Judiciary Committee for nearly a week. The former Reagan and Bush 41 Justice Department official was eventually confirmed by the full Senate in September 2005 by a vote of 78-22. In his 10 years as chief, Roberts has overseen a Supreme Court that has expanded the role of money in politics, twice upheld President Obama's signature Affordable Care Act and expanded marriage access to same-sex couples
