Democratic candidates were quick to condemn Trump's comments. Hillary Clinton called it "shocking rhetoric." Bernie Sanders called it "outrageous." Republican candidates also distanced themselves from Trump. Jeb Bush called the comments "abhorrent." Even Ted Cruz, a self-described "fan" of Donald Trump, opposed the plan, citing First Amendment concerns.. "I'm a big fan of Donald Trump's," Cruz said Friday. "But I'm not a fan for government registries of American citizens. The first First Amendment protects religious liberty, and I've spent the past several decades defending the religious liberty of every American."
