Within weeks, he was leading the polls as the frontrunner, a position he would maintain until becoming the presumptive GOP nominee in May. "We’ll see how long he stays in," The Washington Post's Dan Balz said days after Trump entered the race with a speech that said Mexican immigrants are "bringing in drugs" and are "rapists."
"But right now he’s in, and he’s going to be a disruptive force," Balz continued. "He’s beyond egocentric. He’s very brash. He’s inflammatory."
At the time, Trump was fighting for a spot on the GOP debate stage with 16 other candidates. Republican Party leaders thought Trump would take away a spot from more "credible candidates." Balz called his participation in debates "the party's worst nightmare."
