1.) The White House has asked Congress for $4.5 billion in emergency spending to counter the growing “humanitarian and security crisis” at the Mexico border. More than 103,000 migrants crossed the southern border in April.
2.) The Pentagon is sending another 320 troops to the Mexico border to handle the surge of migrants. Acting Defense Secretary Pat Shanahan also changed rules to allow troops to interact with migrants.
3.) President Trump wants to tighten the process for people seeking asylum. The proposed plan would impose an application fee and bar some asylum seekers from obtaining work permits. The Justice Department and Department of Homeland Security have 90 days to respond.
