And days later, Turkey launched a military operation in the area targeting the U.S. ally in the fight against ISIS – the Kurds. Turkish President Erdogan had long threatened to send troops over the border to create a buffer zone near the Turkish-Syrian border. Many Republicans, however, were outraged by the president’s move and spoke out about what they called a betrayal of the Kurds.
