as posted by the channelThe House just approved the Department of Homeland Security funding bill, and I have to say: I'm disappointed. Deeply disappointed.
Democrats had a chance to demand accountability. They had a chance to insist on reforms. They had leverage. And they didn';t use it.
A handful of Democrats joined Republicans to pass funding for ICE—with no real reforms, no accountability measures, nothing. This happened despite everything we've witnessed over the past
weeks. Despite the abuses. Despite the constitutional violations. Despite a 5-year-old child being used as
bait.
Democrats had leverage. They could have shut down the government over this. They could have insisted
on reforms as part of the funding bill. Hakeem Jeffries reportedly tried to negotiate changes, but a handful
of Democrats went and did their own thing and voted for this anyway.
The least that could have been done was to pass some reforms as part of that funding bill. But they didn't
really even do that.
