The surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia and the loss of the Confederate capital at Richmond shortly before marked the end of any real hope that the remaining confederate forces had of winning the war, but multiple confederate forces remained in the field, isolated but not defeated. It took almost another month for President Davis to declare the Confederacy dissolved, and Davis himself was captured on May 10th.
