404 years ago, on December 4, 1619 forty colonists arrived on the Good Ship Margaret at the site of a Virginia Company land grant along the James river. The short lived Berkeley Colony is an interesting story, history nearly lost until the rediscovery of documents in the late nineteenth century. And while the history of the colony itself is interesting, those documents resulted in a specific historical controversy over one of America’s national holidays.
