On November 17, 1924 the New York Times wrote a scathing editorial about a craze taking over the nation: “Latest of the problems presented for solution by psychologists interested in mental peculiarities of mobs and crowds” The editors seethed, “Is created by what is well called the craze over cross-word puzzles.” You might find the black and white squares challenging or annoying, or maybe even irrelevant. But whether looking across or down, the great crossword controversy deserves to be remembered.
