The American Civil proved a fertile testing ground for military technologies. Among those was the widespread use of the rifled cannon, which so improved accuracy and range that it helped transform defensive tactics and fortifications forever. Nowhere was that more obviously demonstrated than in the destruction of one of the Confederate state’s most impressive strongholds: Fort Pulaski.
