In light of the recent US Supreme Court verdict, Professor John Haldane explains why America has bucked the Western trend of increasingly liberal abortion laws.

He argues that, fundamentally, Americans are more attached to family life, that ultrasounds have brought about greater awareness of fetal life and increased survival rates of premature births are ethically incongruous with late-term abortions.

Dr. John Haldane is Emeritus Professor of Moral Philosophy at St Andrews University, Scotland. He has numerous affiliations with universities around the world, and holds additional professorships at Birmingham University, Baylor University and Australian Catholic University.

Professor Haldane is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, former Chair of the Royal Institute of Philosophy in London, and a member of the Pontifical Academy for Life in Rome.

He has published some 200 academic papers covering areas such as metaphysics, philosophy of religion, ethics, and aesthetics. He is Chair of the Advisory Board of EthicsFinder, an expertly curated ethics search engine database developed by Australian Catholic University. Professor Haldane formerly served as a papal advisor to the Vatican.
