0:36Now PlayingCadaveric spasm, also known as instantaneous rigor, is a rare phenomenon that occurs in some cases of sudden and violent death. It is a type of rigor mortis, which is the stiffening of the body that occurs after death due to a lack of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) in the muscles.
In cadaveric spasm, the muscles of the body become rigid and fixed in the position they were in at the moment of death, rather than gradually stiffening over time as in normal rigor mortis. This occurs because the muscles contract so strongly and suddenly at the moment of death that they become fixed in that position.
Cadaveric spasm usually occurs in cases of sudden and violent death, such as homicide or suicide, where the victim is caught off guard and unable to react or move. It is also more common in cases where the victim has been physically fit or engaged in physical activity at the time of death.
While cadaveric spasm is rare, it can be an important piece of evidence in forensic investigations, as the position of the body at the time of death can provide clues about the circumstances surrounding the death.
