Haidt opened the lecture by revisiting the argument at the heart of his global bestseller, The Anxious Generation — that the rapid shift from a “play-based childhood” to a “phone-based childhood” between 2010 and 2015 has profoundly altered human development worldwide. From there, Haidt expanded the conversation beyond mental health, exploring the wide-reaching consequences of phone-based life on education, attention, creativity, the economy, family dynamics, and democracy.
