Cape Town is one of Africa’s biggest tourist destinations, with millions of people passing through the city every year.

I’ve spent a long time filming in some of the country’s most dangerous neighbourhoods, and despite the risks, I’ve never been robbed or felt seriously threatened in any of those places.

What I found interesting is that the only times I’ve ever been robbed or attacked while filming have been in Cape Town’s city centre. I also know many others who’ve had similar experiences, ranging from phone theft and pickpocketing to being attacked in Ubers and robbed in everyday situations.

For this documentary, I wanted to see what’s really going on in the city. We spent several days in some of the most well known hotspots, deliberately putting ourselves in situations where these crimes are reported, to see how dangerous it really is.

What happened was not what I expected.
