as posted by the channelIn this episode, we talk to philosopher David Kelley, who makes a case for a rationalist approach to human connection. Starting with the virtue of "benevolence":
Sensitivity: Caring enough treat people as fully human, in order to understand their perspectives and identify common humanity.
Social Entrepreneurialism: Taking the time to create little interpersonal connections, and allowing ourselves to be surprised by the good in people.
We also talk about life authoring, atheism, the evolution of cooperation, overcoming tribal impulses at scale, and pretty much everything else.
David received his Ph.D. in philosophy from Princeton University in 1975 after completing a doctoral dissertation, titled "The Evidence of the Senses". He was an assistant professor of philosophy and cognitive science at Vassar College for seven years. He then taught logic for a brief time at Brandeis University, while working as a freelance writer for Barron's and other publications. He spearheaded the "open" faction of objectivist philosophy, and continues to serve on the board of The Atlas Society.
