Falling in love for the first time is one of the most intoxicating experiences that you can have in your life. For most people, that happens during their formative teenage years, caught in an uncontrollable cyclone of hormones, unrelenting obsession and codependency.

A time where love and lust are seemingly indistinguishable, and the idea of “happily ever after” takes over every thought and action. Many find that their first love story ends sooner than expected, and while the experience might be painful at the time, eventually, they realize that life goes on, and love after love exists.

Most people.

That wasn’t the case on December 9th, 2020 in the small town of Elkview, West Virginia. Located about 20 minutes from the state capital Charleston and nestled on the Elk River, residents of Elkview find themselves happily removed from the city enjoying a comparatively slower paced life, where relationships with family and friends take precedence.

But on that fateful Friday afternoon, chaos broke loose when gunshots began ringing out in a single family home located at 1384 Cemetery Hill Drive. By the end, nearly an entire family would be victims of homicide.

The bodies of Dan Long, Risa Saunders, Gauge Ripley, and Jameson Long were found the following Sunday, December 13th, at 10:40 AM when a relative went to check on the family after being unable to contact them for a few days prior. Curiously, one member of the family was missing, then 16 year old Gavin Smith.

He was eventually located at the home of his girlfriend, then 17 year old Rebecca Walker, hiding behind a dresser. Gavin would be apprehended without issue and taken in for questioning, where he would immediately confess to being the arbiter of fate for his entire family.

The details surrounding the circumstances of Gavin’s monstrous crimes would soon come to light in the interrogation room. Details which include why he did it, an unlikely accomplice, and shockingly - who watched it all happen live.
