Most people hear the word write off and think it sounds shady. Like someone is getting away with something they should not be. That is not what is happening at all.
The IRS literally rewards you for certain behaviours. Buy real estate. Write it off. Start a business. Write it off. Invest in energy and oil and gas. Write it off.
The government cannot build enough affordable housing, fund enough energy production, or create enough jobs on its own. So it incentivises people to do those things by reducing their tax bill when they do.
The tax code is not a punishment. It is a playbook. It was written to tell you exactly what the government wants you to do and exactly what you will get in return for doing it.
The only question is whether you are using it like one.
