Hawaiian activists Kaniela Ing and Kahala Johnson react to Biden’s pathetic response to the Maui fires and his claim that he’s “practically” (but not actually) declared a climate emergency. . Kaniela Ing says, “To say that you've ‘practically’ done something is insulting to the legacies of all who perished in this fire. And anything less at this point a trillion dollars a year from the US government is just unacceptable. All the main companies that are producing over 70% of the carbon pollution today originate from the US. So to pass the buck at this point when you did the bare minimum is anti-science and it's outright climate [change] denial.”

“I kind of wanna get angry,” says Kahala Johnson, “but part of me is also just really desensitized to anything coming out of this. The sad part though, is that despite these images of real consequences of climate change, sea level rise, you still have that one fu*king tourist who's going out on the tour boats to like go see the turtles while everything behind them is completely ruined. What's helped me though is talking with those who are on the ground, talking with those who are supporting us from the other islands and just reminding them of whatever happens we are here for each other. Nobody saves us but us. And that power that comes from the community when we recognize it, we recognize each other. I think that's worth a lot more than any kind of recognition or acknowledgement from the establishment, though they need to do their sh*t. I'll be real about that too.”

Kaniela Ing is a former member of the Hawaii House of Representatives representing Maui, currently national director of the Green New Deal Network. Kahala Johnson (He/They/Oia/Siya) is a Hawaiian-Filipinx organizer from Waiehu, Maui and a Kiai of Haleakala and Mauna Kea.
