NY Times Is Censoring Its Journalists On Palestine

Middle East scholar Assal Rad discusses the leaked NY Times memo instructing reporters to avoid using words like "ethnic cleansing," "genocide," and even "Palestine." Rad is not surprised by this censorship: "I was just happy that there was evidence to confirm what those of us who have been paying attention already knew, which is they are absolutely intentionally and deliberately using this language to whitewash Israel's crimes, And dehumanize Palestinians. This is censorship. You're telling your journalists, don't use real words to describe things. in any other country, if someone was to say that we would call it, rightfully, censorship, we would call it propaganda. Independent free media is supposed to question and challenge the state and its leaders, not parrot them."

Dr. Assal Rad is a scholar of Middle East history. She works on research and writing related to U.S. foreign policy issues, the Middle East, and contemporary Iran. Her writing can be seen in Newsweek, The National Interest, The Independent, Foreign Policy and more, and she has appeared as a commentator on BBC World, Al Jazeera, CNN, and NPR. She completed a PhD in History from the University of California, Irvine in 2018 and is the author of The State of ResistancePolitics, Culture, and Identity in Modern Iran (Cambridge University Press, 2022).
