Beirut-based journalist Rania Khalek reacts to Israel’s terrorist attack on Lebanon using pagers: “The Israelis launched what can only be described as a countrywide act of terrorism against the Lebanese people. This is such a dirty way to attack people. And it was essentially an attack on civilians because you turn human beings into bombs. This is something that exploded in people's faces. It killed at least one child. It's completely disgusting.” Rania points out that this was not just an attack on the armed resistance: “Members of Hezbollah can mean a lot of things. It can also mean people who work in civil institutions in Lebanon. Every major political party has institutions that they run. They run hospitals, they run clinics, they run schools. So you're talking about explosive devices going off in schools, in grocery stores, in hospitals.” Rania also criticizes the way the Western media is framing Israel’s terrorism: “ it's also disgusting the way it's been covered in the media. You see really ridiculous headlines and ridiculous framing that this was some sort of attack on Hezbollah. No, this was an attack on the country of Lebanon. And you can imagine the kind of coverage and framing it would receive had Hezbollah or Hamas or an adversary country like Iran or China or Russia had rigged devices of American officials to just explode across the country while they're out running errands.” Rania also criticizes “the smirking, evil spokesperson of the U. S. State Department, Matt Miller for legitimizing Israel’s “dirty” terrorism.
Rania Khalek is a Middle East-based journalist for Breakthrough News, where she hosts the show Dispatches. She also co-hosts the weekly Freedom Side livestream with Eugene Puryear.
