President Trump and Kim Jong Un's historic meeting is tonight. In the past, North Korean charm offensives have often led to fruitless negotiations but the Trump Administration has indicated it has little patience for that. So what are the consequences of failure? There may be a resumed advocacy for a U.S. preventive military attack on North Korea or Trump could ratchet up pressure on North Korea and enablers of its nuclear and missile programs. But there is more that the U.S. could do. So rather than a recklessly provocative preventive attack, the U.S. should implement a longer-term comprehensive strategy.
