Pat Locke, One of the First Female Cadets at West Point

Retired Army Major Pat Locke shares her inspirational story of becoming one of the first female cadets accepted into the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and the first ever black woman to graduate from West Point by order of merit. Locke, who grew up in extreme poverty, succeeded despite all the challenges life threw at her and, through sheer determination, became the first member of her family to go to college—a value that she continues to impart to young men and women pursuing an education.
