as posted by the channelDespite his fame, Marco Polo was not the first European to travel across the Mongol Empire in the 13th century. Beginning in the 1240s, following the devastating invasions of the Rus’, Hungary, and Poland, the Popes and Kings of Europe were desperate to learn more of this new enemy, and began to send diplomats and letters to the Great Khans. One of these men who bore such a letter was William of Rubruck, a Franciscan friar who made the long trip to Mongolia carrying a letter from the King of France Louis IX- though insisting the entire time he was not a diplomat, merely holding the letter for a friend. He wrote of his experiences among the Mongols; it is his journey we share with you today.
