With steel in short supply and traditional carriers vulnerable to U-boat attacks, the British sought an innovative solution for escorting convoys across the Atlantic. A 30-foot prototype was built on Patricia Lake in Alberta, Canada, while the full-scale version was planned to be 2,000 feet long.
