After years of successful campaigns, his army faced a devastating defeat in 307 BCE, leaving many captured. To celebrate their victory, the Carthaginians performed ritual sacrifices by throwing prisoners into a bonfire. However, fate had other plans. A gust of wind caused the flames to spread uncontrollably, engulfing their entire camp in chaos. At the same time, a large contingent of Libyan defectors arrived, only to be mistaken for enemies, leading to further panic and a stampede. This tragic miscalculation forced Agathocles’ army to retreat in disarray.
