Kings and Generals animated historical documentary series on the Early Modern Era continues with a video in which we talk about the events that led to the Risorgimento - beginning of the Unification of Italy. For centuries, The Fragmented Italian Peninsula was divided into numerous states, each with its own ruler and foreign influences. However, the rise of nationalism and revolutionary ideas led to The Influence of Napoleon and the Congress of Vienna, which reshaped Italy’s political landscape. Early efforts at unification, including Early Insurrections and Austrian Intervention, were crushed by reactionary forces. Secret societies such as the Carbonari and The Role of Secret Societies and Mazzini’s Young Italy played a crucial role in keeping the dream of unification alive. By 1848, growing revolutionary unrest culminated in The Five Days of Milan, a dramatic uprising that expelled Austrian forces from the city. Sensing an opportunity, King Charles Albert of Piedmont intervened, marking the beginning of The First War of Italian Independence Begins. This was the first major military effort to free Italy from Austrian rule, setting the stage for a long and arduous fight for unification.
