Kings and Generals historical animated documentary series on the history of middle ages and medieval period continues with a video on how the Habsburgs built their empire on lies, fraud and deception. Previously we talked about the of the Habsburgs (). The story of the Habsburgs is one of clever tactics, forged documents, ambitious marriages, and improbable luck. It begins with the crafted image of the White King, a romanticized alter ego of Emperor Maximilian I, designed to project wisdom and harmony. But behind that myth lies a dynasty that rose from obscurity to dominate Europe. The rise of the Habsburgs in Austria began with their inheritance of the region and an early struggle for legitimacy, which they supported through strategic adoption of Babenberg symbolism. Their fortunes changed with the forgery of the Privilegium Maius, which manufactured Roman and Imperial charters to elevate Austria’s status. This deception laid the groundwork for the strategic acquisition of Tyrol, a wealthy alpine region added through manipulation and opportunistic alliances. Yet, the family faced setbacks, including Austria’s division and internal conflicts between competing Habsburg branches. Their resurgence came through the Burgundian marriage and inheritance, where young Maximilian married Mary of Burgundy, gaining vast territories. His reign set the stage for the future empire. Under Maximilian I and the Habsburg consolidation, the dynasty unified its holdings and began its campaign of dynastic expansion through marriage, birthing a saying“Let others wage waryou, happy Austria, marry.”
