Kings and Generals historical animated documentary series on the Eastern Front of World War II starts out with the prelude episode #7. Previously we discussed the Soviet conflicts of the 1930s, including the war with Japan in the Far East and the Winter War, and the Purges in the military (), while this episode will focus on the Spanish Civil War. Before World War II erupted, the Spanish Civil War became a violent testing ground for ideologies and emerging militaries. In this episode, we begin with the prelude to the Spanish Civil War, tracing the unstable politics and social unrest that gripped 1930s Spain. As tensions boiled over, the conflict exploded with the outbreak of civil war, launching Franco’s coup and sparking a brutal internal struggle. Quickly, Spain became a proxy battlefield. Foreign involvement begins as Germany, Italy, and the Soviet Union send troops, weapons, and aircraft, turning Spain into a theater for their geopolitical aims. Germany’s Condor Legion and German weapons like the Ju87 Stuka and Bf109 made their combat debut, shaping future Luftwaffe doctrine. Meanwhile, the Soviets funneled aid to the Republicans, but their support came with political strings and internal purges. Soviet aid and internal Republican struggles strained the antifascist side, weakening their military coordination. Finally, we address the myths and real lessons of Spain, questioning whether the war truly served as a “dress rehearsal” for WWII or merely highlighted tactical and logistical limits.
