Kings and Generals historical animated documentary series on the Eastern Front of World War II continues with the third week of the largest invasion in history Operation Barbarossa, as Smolensk is under attack. Previously we have covered the second week with the capture of Minsk and the Red Army on the run (). In the second week of July 1941, while German panzers drove toward Smolensk, Leningrad, and Kyiv, a different kind of war raged behind Soviet lines. Entire factories were dismantled and shipped east beyond the Urals, as Stalin’s government scrambled to preserve the industrial heart of the USSR. In this weekbyweek episode, we cover the staggering relocation effort that helped sustain the Red Army, even as frontline forces suffered immense losses. On the battlefield, Army Group North pushed toward Luga and Soltsy, but delays and terrain exposed German spearheads to Soviet counterattacks. In the center, Timoshenko's Western Front struggled to resist the Smolensk offensive, losing hundreds of tanks and key positions. Meanwhile, Army Group South faced mounting logistical and operational challenges as the Soviet mechanized corps counterattacked in Ukraine, forcing Hitler to rethink his orders around Kyiv and Uman. Despite impressive victories, the Wehrmacht’s fuel shortages and inadequate logistics began to show. The myth of swift conquest was cracking, even if no one in Berlin realized it yet.
