Kings and Generals historical animated documentary series on the history of Rome continues a video in which we compare politics of the Roman world during the Republic and Empire. For over two thousand years, the political institutions of Rome shaped the destiny of the Mediterranean world. From the overthrow of the monarchy in 509 BC to the Senate’s dominance in the Republic and the eventual rise of Augustus as the first Emperor, Rome’s political system evolved in response to crises, wars, and ambition. This episode explores the structure and role of the Roman Republican Senate, from its origins as the guardian of the res publica to its decline amidst political violence, civil wars, and the ambitions of men like the Gracchi brothers, Marius, Sulla, and Caesar. We examine how the Senate’s authority crumbled, how Caesar’s dictatorship transformed the Republic into an Empire in all but name, and how Augustus formalized this transition. The video also compares the Republican Senate to its successor in the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire, where the Senate existed largely in name, stripped of its former power and reduced to ceremonial functions.
