Kings and Generals historical animated documentary series on the Eastern Front of World War II continues with the seventh week of the largest invasion in history Operation Barbarossa. Previously we have covered the sixth week as in early August 1941, the Soviet Union's vast manpower reserves and relentless mobilization clashed with a stretched and overextended German army, whose initial victories masked growing logistical strain, manpower shortages, and strategic indecision that would soon undermine its eastern campaign. (). In this episode of our Eastern Front WeekbyWeek series, we dive into the pivotal second week of August 1941. As the dust settles over Smolensk and Uman, the Wehrmacht prepares for its next movesshifting Army Group Center's Panzers to reinforce flanks and support future offensives. But the Red Army isn't idle. In Ukraine, Rundstedt's Army Group South is facing severe supply shortages and mounting losses, while fierce fighting erupts in Odesa during the brutal siege. Meanwhile, Stalin turns to the West, initiating largescale purchases from the United States and even offering American troops access to the fronthighlighting Soviet desperation in the face of mounting disasters. We explore the early mechanics of LendLease and the vital role Allied aid played in sustaining the Soviet war effort. North of Leningrad, Vatutin attempts a daring counteroffensive, seeking to replicate his earlier success at Soltsy. And finally, we turn to Zhukov’s assault on the Yelna salienthis first major operation since Khalkhin Golas Soviet forces begin to recover from the shocks of Operation Barbarossa.
