Kings and Generals historical animated documentary series on the history of the Ottoman empire and Middle Ages with a video in which we discuss how to defend against the Ottomans. In this video, we trace how Europe adapted to face the rising Ottoman threat. From the Ottoman Threat Emerges in the late 1300s, when victories in the Balkans and the crushing defeat at Nicopolis shocked Christendom, to the Early Advice on Ottoman Tactics given by local commanders ignored by Western knights, we uncover how Europe learned painful lessons. We then explore The Memoir of a Janissary, written by Konstantin Mihailović, who revealed the inner workings of Mehmed II’s elite forces and warned of their entrenched infantry and deadly firearms. His insights laid bare the strengths and Vulnerabilities of the Ottomans, including supply issues, disorganized artillery, and reliance on subject peoples prone to revolt. Meanwhile, Bertrandon de la Broquière’s Observations offered Western Europe intelligence on Ottoman methods, stressing discipline, ambush tactics, and the value of lightly armed troops and archers. We also examine Religion as a Weapon of Warfare, as figures like George of Hungary emphasized the spiritual struggle against Islam’s expansion. Finally, in Lessons Learned & European Response, we see how strategies evolved over time, leading to victories at Vienna and Lepanto, showing how Europe’s survival hinged on adapting to an unfamiliar and formidable foe.
