Kings and Generals animated historical documentary series on the early modern history and history of the United States of America, continues with a new video on the conclusion of the Civil War. Previously, we have covered the American Revolution the War of American Independence () and the beginning of the Civil War (). This second part of the American Civil War epic covers the war’s decisive middle and final phases, from the aftermath of Confederate success at Chancellorsville to the collapse of the Confederacy and the wider military lessons Europe drew from the conflict. The video opens by explaining why Robert E. Lee’s battlefield victories could not solve the Confederacy’s deeper strategic problems, including manpower shortages, industrial weakness, diplomacy, and the growing pressure of Union grand strategy.

From there, the story tracks the major campaigns that shaped the outcome of the war: Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Lee’s invasion that culminated in Gettysburg, followed by the struggle for the Mississippi and the Vicksburg Campaign. It also explores the western theater in depth, including Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Knoxville, and the emergence of Grant and Sherman as the Union’s key commanders.

The later sections follow the brutal war of attrition in 1864–1865: the Atlanta Campaign, Sherman’s March to the Sea, Grant’s Overland Campaign, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, the Siege of Petersburg, and the Battle of the Crater. The video then moves into the final collapse of Confederate resistance, including the Carolinas and Alabama campaigns, Selma, Five Forks, and the Appomattox Campaign that ended with Lee’s surrender.

Finally, the documentary examines how foreign observers in Britain, France, Prussia, and Austria interpreted the war, and what lessons they took—or failed to take—from American military innovation, mass mobilization, and modern industrial warfare. This is a detailed, campaign-by-campaign analysis of how the Civil War was won, lost, and studied by the world.
