Kings and Generals historical animated documentary series on the history of the early modern world, British empire, Napoleonic wars and evolution of armies and tactics continues with a video on the British light infantry. In this video, we explore how Britain transformed its light infantry into one of the most effective fighting forces of the Napoleonic Wars. While the 95th Rifles are often remembered as the iconic green-jacketed sharpshooters of the Peninsular War, they were only one part of a wider revolution in British military training. At the center of that revolution stood General John Moore, whose reforms at Shorncliffe Camp reshaped how British soldiers drilled, skirmished, shot, marched, and fought. We examine why Britain lagged behind France in light infantry tactics at the turn of the nineteenth century, how Moore and other reformers addressed those weaknesses, and how regiments like the 43rd, 52nd, 60th, and 95th were forged into elite troops. The video also looks at the daily training methods, officer education, discipline, and battlefield flexibility that made the Shorncliffe system so effective. Finally, we follow these regiments into the Peninsular War, where the Light Division demonstrated the value of Moore’s methods in real combat. This is the story of the soldiers, ideas, and reforms that helped Britain challenge Napoleon’s best generals in Spain and Portugal.
