How did the Ottoman Empire create one of the most feared military institutions of the medieval world? This video traces the origins of the Janissaries, from the early need for a standing force loyal directly to the sultan to the creation of the Kapıkulu corps, the Pençik system, and the later Devshirme child levy. It explains how captured and conscripted Christian youths were taken into Ottoman service, trained, disciplined, converted, and transformed into elite infantry. The video also explores the wider Ottoman military machine, including the Azabs, Timarlı Sipahis, Akıncı raiders, and the battle formation that brought these different forces together into a single effective army. From their early use as archers and reserve troops to their growing political and military importance, the Janissaries emerge here as a symbol of Ottoman centralization and state-building.
