Kings and Generals animated historical documentary series on the history of medieval period and Franks continues with a video on how the Capetians took the Frankish crown. In 987, Hugh Capet was crowned King of the Franks in Reims, ending Carolingian rule in West Francia and beginning a dynasty that would shape the future of France for centuries. But the Capetian rise was not a sudden coup. It was the result of generations of careful political survival, military service, marriage alliances, and opportunism. This video traces the story from the collapse of Charlemagne’s empire after the death of Louis the Pious to the Treaty of Verdun, the weakening of royal authority, and the rise of powerful regional magnates. Among them were the Robertians, ancestors of the Capetians, whose fortunes began with Robert the Strong and grew through the heroic defence of Paris by Odo against the Vikings. As Carolingian kings struggled to control West Francia, Robertian leaders became kingmakers, rivals, and sometimes kings themselves. Hugh the Great refused the throne, while his son Hugh Capet slowly built the alliances that would make his election possible. When Louis V died in 987, Hugh emerged as the safest candidate for nobles, clergy, and Ottonian power alike — founding the Capetian dynasty.
