Kings and Generals historical animated documentary series on the history of the early modern world, continues with a video on the Golden Age of Piracy. When the War of the Spanish Succession ended, thousands of experienced privateers suddenly found themselves unemployed. Many responded by raising the black flag, helping ignite the most notorious phase of the Golden Age of Piracy. This documentary explores how economic hardship, collapsing wages and conflict with Spanish coast guards transformed former privateers into pirates. From the ruins of Nassau, Benjamin Hornigold and his followers established a pirate stronghold that challenged Britain’s control of the Caribbean. Soon, figures such as Blackbeard, Charles Vane, “Black Sam” Bellamy, Calico Jack Rackham, Anne Bonny and Stede Bonnet became legends of the Atlantic. But the Pirate Republic could not survive indefinitely. Woodes Rogers arrived with royal pardons and orders to restore British authority, forcing every pirate to choose between surrender and resistance. Blackbeard attempted to build a new base in North Carolina, while Vane and Rackham continued their increasingly desperate campaigns. Finally, the extraordinary Bartholomew “Black Bart” Roberts carried piracy from the Americas to the coast of Africa. His remarkable success—and last battle at Cape Lopez—marked the closing chapter of an era. Discover how the pirates rose, ruled the seas and were ultimately hunted into extinction.
